Det er lagt opp til at en skal kunne kombinere et besøk på Dalen Hotel med båttur på kanalen. Det er daglige bussavganger i begge retninger mellom hotellet og Skien slik at en eksempelvis kan ta båten fra Dalen Hotel til Ulefoss om morgenen og returnere med buss om ettermiddagen eller omvendt. For sesongen 2009 vil det være ankomst Dalen med "Victoria" hver onsdag og lørdag fra 18. mai og frem til 13. september. Båten går fra Dalen til Skien hver torsdag og søndag og denne koresponderer med buss tilbake fra Ulefoss til Dalen. Fra slutten av mai vil hotellet i tillegg hente sine gjester på Lunde hver mandag, tirsdag og fredag og kjøre den gamle flotte veien langs kanalen opp til hotellet.

The Telemark Canal was hewn out of the rocks by hand well over 100 years ago, and when completed in 1892. Europeans described it as the "eighth wonder of the world". 500 men had worked for five years to dynamite their way through the rocks.
The Telemark Canal stretches 105 kilometres from Skien to Dalen. The Canal consists of eight locks with a total of 18 lock chambers, and a difference in height of 72 metres. There are six municipalities which are known as Canal Municipalities: Skien, Nome, Kviteseid, Tokke, Sauherad and Notodden.

The Queen of the canal, "Victoria", built in 1882, has repeated her journey between coast and mountain for over a hundred years. Despite her old age, Victoria is perfectly suited to the needs of today on her journey through the locks and over beautiful lakes. This traditional vessel can accomodate 180 passengers, whilst the somewhat younger "Henrik Ibsen" has room for 220. A few years ago this vessel, which is almost tailormade for the locks, was bought from Sweden, adjusted to suit the canal environment and clothed in "Telemark's national costume". Both Victoria and Henrik Ibsen have open decks both fore and aft, so that passengers can fully appreciate the fairytale journey from sea to mountain.
